Srinagar, March 6: Pesticide dealers & distributors of Kashmir have announced to shut down their shops and offices for two days in protest against what they call the unnecessary harassment by government officials in the name of checking misbranded and spurious agro-chemicals.
President of infleuntial Pesticides and Fertilizers Dealers and Distributors’ Association, Kashmir, Syed Muhammad Yusuf told Ziraat Times Saturday evening that the association had taken the decision after due consideration of the situation.
“We have a consistent position that the administration must adopt a robust mechanism of testing of large consignments of agro-chemicals at warehouse level only so that only tested and good-quality products reach the retail sale stage. By resorting to day-to-day checks at retail level, without the required testing capability, authorities are only making the life of the businesses miserable”, Mr Yusuf added.
Maintaining that the Association cooperates with the relevant law enforcement agencies, Mr Yusuf said that the authorities are expected to act according to Insecticide Act.
“By law, the designated authority is the enforcement section of the Agriculture Department to curb spurious and sub-standard agro-chemicals. But what we see is that even Revenue Officials, etc. harass innocent businesses”, the Association said, adding that “if unnecessary harassment is not stopped we will go for indefinite strike.”
The association has asked all constituent dealers not to sell any product during the 2-day shut down period.
