Srinagar: One of Asia’s largest apple fruit trading market – Sopore Fruit Mandi – has expressed its deep concern for “widespread sale and marketing of pesticides and fungicides” in North Kashmir and has appealed J&K administration to take urgent steps to save the sector from “extinction”.
Malik Fayaz, alias Kakaji, President, Sopore Fruit Mandi, in a statement received by Ziraat Times said, “unchecked markets due to lockdown has resulted in sale of sub-standard and fake pesticides and fungicides. The apple industry is already at the verge of extinction and this has added to our worries.”
” I request the Lieutenant Governor, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir and Ddeputy Commissioner Baramulla to constitute checking squads and take stern action against those who are manufacturing and selling these sub standard and fake pesticides and fungicides”, Mr Fayaz said.
Requesting Horticulture Department “to enquire about the same to save farmers and fruit growers in particular and apple industry in general”, the Association further said that they “hope J&K police can play a vital role with civil administration in identifying those who are manufacturing and selling these sub standard and fake pesticides and fungicides.”
Pertinetly, as reported by Ziraat Times in recent days, reported sale and marketing of fake and substandard agro chemicals across Kashmir has caused deep worries among farmers.
