India lost 14.5 million tourism jobs in Q1 of 2020: NCAER

NEW DELHI: The Covid19 pandemic has precipitated “significant” jobs losses in the tourism sector after the lockdown, a new research on the impact of coronavirus on tourism performed by the National Council of Applied Economic Research has reported.
On opening day of Parliament, the tourism ministry referenced the NCAER report in response to a query raised by Lok Sabha MPs Ramesh Kaushik and Raju Bista in which it mentioned 14.5 million jobs had been lost through the first quarter, adopted by 5.2 million jobs through the second quarter and one other 1.8 million jobs through the third quarter of 20-21, after the lockdown was imposed.
However, no formal research was performed to evaluate the State/UT-wise impact of Covid-19 on the tourism trade. As such, no accurate data is available about the impact of the pandemic on J&K’s tourism industry.
The NCAER report, a draft of which has been accepted by the tourism ministry, has not been printed so far. The sponsored research resulted in an analytical report that used mathematical fashions to evaluate the loss to financial system in phrases of tourism expenditure, tasks that complete restoration could solely occur in 3-4 years, assesses the loss to family incomes, and comprises suggestions for the revival of the tourism sector.
It additionally mentioned Foreign Exchange Earnings (FEE) through the months between January and December 2020 fell by 76.3% in comparability to corresponding interval in 2019.
