News Agencies

Srinagar: Jailed chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai died at the government medical college in Jammu where he was transferred from a Jammu prison on Tuesday.

The 80-year old politician had been lodged in Kot Balwal Jail in Jammu since he was booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA) in July 2020.

While officially no reasons have been cited about the medical conditions leading to Mr Sehrai’s demise, it is generally believed that he died of Covid19 complications as his oxygen level had dropped considerably on Tuesday.

Mr Sehrai had taken over the chairmanship of TeH from Syed Ali Shah Geelani in 2018.

Originally from Lolab area of Kupwara, Sehrai was a log time Jamaat-e-Islami leader, until both Geelani and him part ways to form TeH.
