J&K’s Delimitation Commission gets 1-year extension

Srinagar, Mar 4: The central government has extended the term of the Delimitation Commission, mandated to redraw electoral constituencies in Jammu & Kashmir, by one year.

In a new twist to the delimitation initiative of the union government, the notification also suggests that the north-eastern states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland have been excluded from the mandate of the Commission.

In this regard, the Union Ministry of Law & Justice issued a notification Wednesday night to extend the tenure of Justice (Retd.) Ranjana Desai, who is heading the panel, by one year.

The commission’s term was coming to end on March 5, 2021.

According to the notification, the Commission’s mandate would now only be to carry out the delimitation exercise in Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory. —(KNO)
