Ziraat Times Exclusive

Srinagar, Feb 18: Petrol prices are witnessing a constant increase in Jammu & Kashmir, with the retail prices topping Rs 93.70 in Kupwara district and Rs 92.73 in capital Srinagar and Rs 89.44 in winter capital in Jammu on Thursday.

According to an analysis of the price rise of petrol and diesel prices in J&K by Ziraat Times, prices are rising on a daily basis for the last two months now, with large variations between regions and sub-regions. Interestingly, retail prices of petrol and diesel are lower in Leh and Kargil compared to those in Kashmir valley.

On the buying petrol price of Rs 32.1 per liter at a petrol pump, on average, after taxes from both central and J&K governments the per liter price comes to Rs 89.29, according to a Ziraat Times analysis.

Generally, petrol and diesel prices in India have been rising unprecedently, pushing retail rates across states. Petrol soared above Rs 100 per litre in Rajasthan, which levies the highest VAT on fuel in the country. In New Delhi, petrol price was Rs 79.95 per litre, according to an official rate matrix.

Interesting, there is a stark variation of the petrol and diesel prices within Jammu & Kashmir, with the retail cost of petrol being Rs 89.44 per liter in Jammu district and Rs 93.70 in Kupwara on February 18, 2021. This situation has resulted in immense local level retail inflation, including much higher costs for various horticulture and agriculture based activities at the start of the farming season.

An official at J&K Petrol Dealers Association told Ziraat Times that the variation was mainly due to the cost of freight.

“The transportation charges have sky rocketed for us, mainly in transportation of fuel to Kashmir valley, and further to areas like Kupwara”, he added.

Here are the petrol prices of petrol across the 22 districts of J&K and Ladakh, with the first price from 18 February, and the second one a day before on 17, February.

Fuel prices have been lower in India even when the price of India’s COB was higher than what it is today. But the current high price is also because the central government has significantly increased the tax on petrol and diesel.

States, too, have slapped their own levies on top of this. Data available on the Indian Oil website shows that central excise duty and state value-added taxes add 32.9 and 20.61 per litre to the cost of petrol in Delhi. The base price, freight and dealer commission, amount to just 35.78 per litre for petrol.
