Stop harassment of transparency activists: RTI Movement

Srinagar: Jammu & Kashmir RTI Movement has demanded that Government officials must stop harassment of transparency activists especially those using Right to Information Act to seek information from public authorities. In a statement Chairman RTI Movement Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat said that booking FIR against Sajad Hussain, a Chadoora based activist, is highly condemnable. He demanded that a high level probe be held against the Municipal Committee Chadoora where funds meant for civic amenities have been mismanaged for the last many years .

Dr Raja Muzaffar hailed former Chief Information Commissioner Wajahat Habibullah, noted activist and Magsaysay awardee Aruna Roy  and former Information Commissioner Shailesh Gandhi for condemning the incident of harassment of Sajad Hussain MC Chadoora.

“In the past also RTI activists were booked under fake charges in Budgam for demanding transparency and accountability. Instead of taking action against the corrupt officials, especially those involved in bungling of public funds, authorities are targeting public spirited citizens. If this continues nobody would raise voice against corruption and these will be chaos all around J&K. We condemn this incident and appeal Lt Governor Manoj Sinha , CIC Bimal Julka , Chief Secretary B V R Subramanium and DGP Dilbagh Singh to intervene ” Dr Raja Muzaffar added.

Pertinently former Chief Information Commissioner Wajahat Habibullah, former Central Information Commissioner, Shailesh Gandhi, Magsaysay awardee and noted RTI activist and ex Member National Advisory Council Aruna Roy have condemned the filing of FIR against Sajad Hussain.
