High Court issues formal order; felling of poplar trees stopped

ZT NEWS NETWORK

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Saturday issued formal directions to keep in abeyance its earlier order of cutting down of female Russian poplar trees. It has asked the Chief Secretary to form an expert committee under Principal Chief Conservator of Forests to examime the matter and report back the findings at the earliest.

Advocate Shafqat Nazir, counsel for the matter, said that the High Court opines that there should be a committee of experts who shall examine the matter in detail and report to the court whether the female Russian poplar trees really pose adverse health risks or not.

Pertinetly, Ziraat Times has been advocating farmers’ case strongly on this and has produced several reports arguing that there was no scientific evidence available to suggest that the pollen from Russian poplar trees posed such a high health risk to warrant cutting them down, and, thereby, causing an environmental and economic catastrophe in Kashmir.

Ziraat Times here produces select sections of the directions.
